On April 12, the Paris Marathon will be held without plastic for the first time in an event of 60,000 participants. To replace the 700,000 plastic water bottles usually used, organizers have redesigned the hydration system, in line with Paris’s 2024 ban on single-use plastics at public events.
Since 2022, they have worked on this challenge despite logistical constraints and long-standing partnerships. Early trials with reusable cups proved unsatisfactory, as they were fragile, unsafe, and impractical for runners.
A specific system has also been designed for the fastest athletes. After several tests, organizers moved away from reusable cups in favor of personal containers and paper cups, combined with water ramps and volunteer refilling. Refined during shorter races, this setup ensures both speed and hygiene.
